You can use any day old bread. I prefer using challah bread (egg bread)!

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    milk
  • 3
    eggs, beaten
  • 1/3 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    pure vanilla extract
  • 4
    slices bread without crust
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • dash(es)
    nutmeg
  • 1/2 c
    raisins, optional

How to Make Old Fashioned Bread Pudding

Step-by-Step

  1. Heat milk over low heat until hot, but not boiling, in a bowl.
  2. Combine eggs, sugar & salt, stir well.
  3. Gradually stir 1/4 of hot milk to the egg mixture & stir in.
  4. Add remaining milk, stiring constantly. Stir in vanilla.
  5. Place bread in buttered baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle raisins over bread about 2 qt. size.
  7. Pour the milk mixture over bread.
  8. Combine cinnamon & nutmeg, sprinkle over pudding mixture.
  9. Bake uncovered at 300 for 50 minutes or until the knife comes out clean. Serve warm with vanilla sauce, if desired.
