Gala apples were getting old, and I craved a dessert, so I cored, peeled and chopped them, and combined them in a casserole with fresh cranberries. Warm desserts are so satisfying in October! Using what I had and not wishing to make a very sweet pudding, I used honey and a small amount of cinnamon and sugar. For texture, I added chopped walnuts and made dumplings with a packaged mix. My husband remarked that "it was very good." Now that's a welcome comment!

Blue Ribbon Recipe

Sweet apples and tart cranberries are always a yummy combo. This dessert isn't overly sweet but it is enough to satisfy your sweet tooth thanks to the honey and cinnamon. The dumplings are a biscuit type and go great with the apples. Delicious with whipped cream, but vanilla ice cream would be fab too. A perfect fall dessert!

How To Make baked apple & cranberries with dumplings

Test Kitchen Tips
We had to add about 1 Tbsp more of buttermilk to get the proper dumpling consistency. And, we thought 4 dumplings were a bit large for our dish so we opted to make 6.
  • 1
Grease bottom of casserole dish; add chopped apples and spread cranberries.
  • 2
    Add walnuts.
  • 3
    Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar.
  • 4
    Drizzle honey over all.
  • 5
Bake in 350 degree preheated oven about 25 minutes.
  • 6
Then top with Bisquick mixture/dumplings, about four small dumplings.
  • 7
Continue baking uncovered for 20 minutes. Serve hot with whipped cream on top.
