Living in Tennessee I used to love to go to farmers markets and get fried pies so I had to learn how to make them.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    baking powder
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 2 Tbsp
    margarine
  • 1
    egg yolk
  • 4 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 1/2 c
    milk
  • 8 oz
    dried fruit ( prefer peaches) cooked and sweetened to taste

How to Make Southern Fried Pies

Step-by-Step

  1. Sift salt, baking powder and flour. Cut in shortening and add egg yolk, sugar and milk to make a dough.
  2. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 4 to 5 inch circles or squares or rectangles whatever is easiest for you just so when you fold them they are around 2 inches wide. Put a tablespoon or scoop on each piece of dough. Fold dough over fruit filling and seal with a fork dipped in flour.
  3. Fry in 360 degree oil until golden brown. Drain and dust with powdered sugar.
