~ simple apple crumb pie ~ with or without caramel

I took my mothers recipe and made it even better. She didn't complain. LOL! I thought she'd ask what I changed, but she didn't. Hers or mine, both are easy and delicious! I warmed up some caramel and piped over the pie. Completely optional. Enjoy warm with a scoop of vanilla or cinnamon ice cream. Yum!

Ingredients

  • 5 - 6 cups peeled, cored and sliced tart apples - i always use granny smith
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 1/2 - lemon - juiced
  • 1/4 cup each - granulated sugar and packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 - 9 - inch unbaked pie crust - i used store bought today
  • CRUMB TOPPING
  • 5 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • sprinkle - of cinnamon

How To Make ~ simple apple crumb pie ~ with or without caramel

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 400 degree F. In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon and flour. Toss to coat apples evenly.
  • Step 2
    Evenly arrange apples in pie crust.
  • Step 3
    In a microwave safe bowl, melt butter. Mix the flour and sugar with the melted butter.
  • Step 4
    Crumble the mixture evenly over the apples and sprinkle with cinnamon, lightly. Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce temperature to 325 degree and bake an additional 25 - 30 minutes or until apples are tender. Note: I used a crust shield for the first 30 minutes.
  • Step 5
    Cool on rack. Keep refrigerated when nor serving.
