This is the basic recipe my mom used for all her pies and tarts. Also a great meat pie base!

yield Two Pie Crusts or 24 tarts

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 sticks butter, unsalted
  • 3 cups ap flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt, kosher
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/3 cup very cold vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup ice cold water

How To Make moms simple pie crust

  • Step 1
    Dice Butter and return to the fridge- butter needs to be cold. Place Flour, sugar and salt into food processor and pulse 3 times. Add the shortening and butter to this mixture. Pulse again about 15 times, or until the mix is crumbly.
  • Step 2
    While the processor is running on pulse, add ice water a little at a time, until the dough begins to form a ball.
  • Step 3
    Once you have a ball, remove from processor onto a lightly floured surface and cut in half. This is enough for two pie crusts, or 24 pie tarts.
