Ingredients
- 2 1/3 cups all purpose flour
- 2/3 cup vegetable shortening
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 - apples, granny smith
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
- 1/4 teaspoon allspice, ground
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons corn starch
- 1 - egg, optional
- 1 tablespoon water
How To Make homemade apple pie
-
Step 1Prepare pie crust by mixing flour and salt. Cut in shortening until flour becomes crumbly. Add water a little at a time until ball forms. Cover dough and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
-
Step 2Peel, core and slice apples. Add spices, sugar, extract, and starch and mix well. Let the apples sit while you prepare the crust. This helps draw out the juices from the apples
-
Step 3Remove dough from frig, divide in half and roll each ball out to cover a 9' pie pan.
-
Step 4Place first crust in pie pan and fill with apple filling
-
Step 5Cover with second crust. Cut slits in the middle so the pie can vent. Preheat your oven to 375' and bake for one hour or until you see juices bubbling through the slits in the pie. If you want a shiny golden brown, mix water with the egg and brush over top crust about 15-20 minutes before the pie is done.
