This is a traditional side on the Thanksgiving table for my family; no recipe collection is complete without it.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium yams
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup syrup or molasses
  • - marshmallows (optional)
  • 2 cups chopped nuts, toasted (optional)

How To Make candied yams

  • Step 1
    Boil yams, DO NOT BREAK THE SKIN! Then peel and cut into quarters or cubes.
  • Step 2
    Place yams in shallow, buttered pan (13x9"). Pour syrup/molasses over yams, add nuts if desired and dot with butter.
  • Step 3
    Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Step 4
    If using marshmallows: pull out of oven after about 20 minutes and add marshmallows, then replace in oven for 5 to 10 minutes more, or until marshmallows are golden around their edges.
