Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 4 - egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 10 tablespoons cold water
  • 7 cups finely chopped, peeled apples
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 dash ground nutmeg

How To Make apple pie bars

  • Step 1
    CRUST: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles course crumbs.
  • Step 2
    In a small bowl, whisk egg yolks, lemon juice, and water; gradually add to flour mixture, tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball. Divide in half. Chill for 30 minutes.
  • Step 3
    Roll out one portion of dough between two large sheets of waxed paper into a 17" X 12" rectangle. Transfer to baking pan.
  • Step 4
    FILLING: In a large bowl, toss the apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg; spread over crust.
  • Step 5
    Roll out remaining dough and add as top crust. Bake at 375* for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
