Apple Crisp - I throw together a simple, quick and inexpensive Firehouse dessert, the Apple Crisp. We also discuss that sometimes the forbidden fruit is the best, that Dulce de Leche can be compared to liquid, hot magma and that recipes are never set in stone. If you decide to make the Dulce De Leche, that takes about 2 - 2 1/2 hours, something you can do in morning or day before. Very easy just need a crock pot.

apples, granny smith, peeled and chopped
1/4 c
pecans, toasted and chopped
1/3 c
brown sugar
1 medium
lemon, zested and juiced (2 tbls)
2 Tbsp
all purpose flour
1 tsp
1/2 tsp

vanilla extract


1/2 c
all purpose flour
1/2 c
brown sugar
1/2 c
pecans, toasted and chopped
1/2 c
quick cut oatmeal
1/4 c
unsalted butter, cold and chopped
1 tsp

sweetened condensed milk

heavy cream
1 tsp
pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp
salt, to taste

How to Make Apple Crisp, with Dulce De Leche

  • 2Tactics - Dulce De Leche

    Submerge a can of sweetened condensed milk in enough water to cover, placed the lid on at set it to low. After a few hours (2-3 to be sure), I removed it with some tongs, placed it in the sink and let it cool for 30 minutes. I then opened it up with a kitchen towel (no liquid hot magma!), add cream, vanilla, salt, blend well and voilà, Dulce de Leche.
  • 3Tactics - Apple Crisp

    Pre-heat the oven to 350°F. To assemble the apple filling, place lemon zest, lemon juice, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl and mix to combine. Place to the side.

    To assemble the topping, place the flour, brown sugar, oatmeal and cinnamon in the other bowl and mix to combine. Then add the butter and using either a pastry blender or your bare hands, mix until the ingredients resemble course sand.

    Place the apple filling into the baking dish and place the topping evenly in top. Place the dish into the oven and cook for 1 hour. The top should be nice and browned. Allow it to cool for 10 minutes and then serve warm with some cinnamon icecream. Enjoy.
