sifted all purpose flour
1/2 tsp
1 c
1/4 c
2 to 3 Tbsp
cold water


tart apples
1/2 c
brown sugar
1/4 to 1/2 c
granulated sugar
1/2 tsp
1 dash(es)
ground nutmeg
1/2 c
chopped walnuts
2 Tbsp
butter or margarine
egg, beaten for brushing pie

How to Make All-American Apple Pie


  • 1Preheat oven to 375 degrees F to 400 degrees F
  • 2For crust, combine flour, shortening, salt and butter with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • 3Gradually stir in water, a little at a time to form a dough.
  • 4Divide pastry in half.
  • 5Form each half to a flat round.
  • 6Wrap in waxed paper or plastic wrap.
  • 7Chill.
  • 8For filling, peel apples and cut into wedges.
  • 9Combine sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • 10Roll out half of pastry.
  • 11Fit into a 9-inch pie pan.
  • 12Place half the apples in pan.
  • 13Sprinkle with sugar.
  • 14Top with remaining apples.
  • 15Sprinkle with walnuts.
  • 16Dot with butter.
  • 17Roll out remaining pastry.
  • 18Cut into strips to make a lattice top.
  • 19Brush dough with beaten egg.
  • 20Bake at 375 degrees F to 400 degrees F for 40 to 50 minutes until apples are soft and dough is lightly brown.
  • 21Serve warm or chilled with whipped cream.
