My family gets together every year around Christmas time to make this recipe. It is a labor of love because it takes some time to roll out, cut all the dough and fry it up, but it is well worth it!

  • 1/4 lb
    butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 c
  • 8
    eggs, beaten well
  • 2 Tbsp
    pure vanilla extract
  • 2 Tbsp
    anise extract
  • 8 c
    flour, sifted
  • 4 Tbsp
    baking powder
  • pinch

How to Make Strufili - Italian Honey Balls


  1. Cream butter and sugar. Add the eggs, vanilla and anise.
  2. Combine the sifted flour, baking powder and salt and add slowly to the wet mixture.
  3. Form into a dough ball. Roll into 1/2” logs and slice into 3/4” sections.
  4. Deep fry. Top with honey and nonpareils or powdered sugar.
