Pinulada (Honey Balls)

Roberta Savio

This is a great hostess gift! My mom would use festive holiday bowls and bring to people she would visit. Fun and easy to make. I remember making these when I was just a kid.

Notes from the Test Kitchen:
These little cookies are delicious! The inside is soft and the outside gets a bit crisp. The cookies really take on the taste of the honey sauce. The colored sprinkles add a crunch and make these very festive. I've seen these called Struffoli too and are a great little bite to satisfy your sweet tooth. They'd make great gifts for the holiday too!

1 lb
or 4 cups of flour, sifted
1 medium
jar of honey
2-3 Tbsp
holiday sprinkles
festive holiday bowls like the small aluminum ones
1 large brown paper bag
oil for deep frying

How to Make Pinulada (Honey Balls)

  • 1Mix eggs and flour together.
  • 2Piece off a medium amount and roll into about a 1/4 inch round snake.
  • 3Cut into small pieces, about 1/4 inch. These will blow up when deep fried
  • 4Fry until just golden, not dark.
  • 5Use a brown paper bag for draining, just place them in and let them cool.
  • 6In a medium size pot, add honey and sugar. Make sure the sugar is completely melted.
  • 7Add some of the balls a little at a time; don't overload the honey pot.
  • 8Scoop out with slotted spoon and place in your bowls of choice, and using wet hands mold it into a mound and sprinkle with sprinkles.
