Our American Family:The Youngs Young

This is another recipe that was made by Pauline Young. Again, her recipe was lost but this recipe is similar the one she made. She also used the same recipe and added cocoa over the dough before she rolled it up and made a Chocolate Roll. It was a family favorite. When Mrs. Young made the Butter Roll she used water. This recipe calls for milk so I put both in. It is your choice. This is very sweet but good.

How to Make Mother's Butter Roll

  1. Make a pastry with flour (self-rising), water and shortening. Work until stiff and roll into a sheet approximately the size of a pie crust. Sprinkle with 3/4-1 cup of sugar and 1 stick of real butter, chipped. Roll into roll and cut into approximately 2-inch rolls. Place rolls in baking dish.
  2. Cover with milk or water mixed with 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla.
  3. Bake in oven at 350 degrees until brown. If it becomes dry, add more milk or water. Serve while hot.
