I was finally cleaning out a basement cupboard and came across my mother's old, hand written recipe "notebook" This particular one was a favorite from my grandmothers collection. . Hope you all enjoy this..

Ingredients
- 6 - egg whites, room temperature
- 3/4 teaspoon creme of tartar
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups broken soda crackers, chopped coarse not fine
- 1 cup pecans, chopped
- 2 packages prepared whipped topping (cool whip) the original recipe, called for whipped cream..cool whip is a quick substitute.
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 cups cherry pie filling
How To Make cherry tort

Step 1Beat egg whites till frothy, add creme of tartar and beat into peaks. Add sugar gradually.

Step 2Fold in crackers and nut meats.

Step 3Spread into 9X11 pan. bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees.

Step 4Add vanilla to whipped cream.

Step 5When cake is cooled, cover with whip cream and chill 1 hour.

Step 6After 1 hour, top with cherries and refrigerate 4 to 6 hours or overnight
