This recipe came from my mother and is a great standby.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 - egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • TOPPING
  • 2 - egg whites
  • 1 cup brown sugar

How To Make caramel squares

  • Step 1
    For the base: Mix all ingredients together with a fork and press into 8" square cake pan.
  • Step 2
    For the top: Beat 2 egg whites until stiff, and 1 cup brown sugar. Spread over the base.
  • Step 3
    Bake at 325 degrees for 30-35 minutes.
