Favorite recipe from Judy. These are the BEST. The secret to a crisp bottom crust is the crushed cornflakes!! Don't forget the coffee!

Ingredients

  • CRUST
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 7 tablespoons milk
  • 1 - egg yolk, beaten
  • 1 cup crushed cornflakes
  • FILLING
  • 8 large apples, cut up
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • CRUST TOPPER
  • 1 - egg white, beaten stiff
  • GLAZE
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How To Make apple slices

  • Step 1
    Sift together flour and salt. Cut in shortening until crumbly.
  • Step 2
    Combine milk and egg yolk. Stir into flour mixture until evenly moistened. (Using your hands works best).
  • Step 3
    Divide dough almost in half. Roll out large half, place in 10 x 15 baking pan.
  • Step 4
    Press dough up on sides of pan, sprinkle with crushed cornflakes.
  • Step 5
    Arrange sliced apples over the top of the crushed cornflakes.
  • Step 6
    combine sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle over apples.
  • Step 7
    Roll out other half of dough to fit on top of apples.
  • Step 8
    Moisten edges of dough with water, seal. *Make a batch and a half of the dough to make sure you have enough to seal.
  • Step 9
    Spread egg white over crust. Bake at 375 degrees for one hour or until golden brown. ( Usually about 50 minutes).
  • Step 10
    Combine powdered sugar, water and vanilla for glaze. Drizzle over bars while warm. Cut and enjoy!
