This is our favorite ice cream in my family. Reminds us of the old-fashioned cream-sicle type bars. (Remember the vanilla on the inside and the orange on the outside?!) I usually make the first 4 steps the night before and chill in the refrigerator and it's ready for the last two steps the next day. I also use a non-electric Donvier ice cream freezer but this works with electric or hand-crank as well.

How to Make Orange cream-sicle ice cream

Step-by-Step

  1. Boil sugar and water 5 minutes
  2. Add orange juice
  3. In another pan, scald 1/2 pint thin cream
  4. Add 2 yolks to the cream and cook and stir the cream with the eggs over hot water in a double boiler or very low heat until thick. Cool.
  5. Add the egg yolk mixture to the first mixture of orange juice.
  6. Beat heavy cream until stiff. Fold into the egg and orange juice mixture.
  7. Freeze. (If your kids are picky about it being really orangey in color, you could add some orange food coloring, but we prefer the original color!)
