norma's hot buttered rum sauce

I have used this sauce for many years during the Holidays and family and friends always ask for the recipe. Of course I made another batch just for the kids and omitted the rum. It is also good over warm spice cake. I have also made this and gave it as a gift when invited to a friends house during the Holidays.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk ( not evaporated )
  • 1/4 cup dark rum if desired
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

How To Make norma's hot buttered rum sauce

  • Step 1
    Add brown sugar, butter, salt and condensed milk to a 2-quart saucepan.
  • Step 2
    Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching.
  • Step 3
    Cook until sugar is dissolved.
  • Step 4
    Remove from heat. Stir in rum and vanilla and mix well.
  • Step 5
    Pour into 2 (10 ounce) decorative jars and screw on lid and ring.
  • Step 6
    Store in refrigerator.
  • Step 7
    Serve warm over ice cream.
  • Step 8
