This dessert comes from the my mother in laws side of the family, the Hafner's. It was enjoyed at family gatherings and I have attempted it several times with rave reviews from all who have tasted it! I love it because it has chocolate AND almond...who can beat that combination??!!

  • 3 c
    vanilla wafer crumbs
  • 5 Tbsp
    melted butter
  • 1/2 c
    butter, softened
  • 2 c
    powdered sugar
  • 3
    egg yolks, reserve whites
  • 2
    melted chocolate squares
  • 1 tsp
    almond flavoring
  • 4 oz
    toasted blanched almond slivers
  • 2 qt
    vanilla ice cream, softened

How to Make Hafner Dessert


  1. Mix together the vanilla wafer crumbs and melted butter. Press 2 cups in the bottom of a 9X13 pan.
  2. Cream together the softened butter, powdered sugar. Add egg yolks, and melted chocolate and almond flavoring.
  3. Beat the egg whites until they are stiff. Fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread evenly over the crust in the pan.
  4. Sprinkle toasted slivered almonds over mixture in the pan.
  5. Carefully spread the softened ice cream over the pan. Sprinkle with remaining crumbs. Freeze for 2 hours or overnight.
