My Grams (Grandma Berry) was the best baker and cook in the whole world, or so I thought! (well, I did have lots and lots of others think so too!!)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups soft fine bread crumbs, (press down lightly in cup)
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted, or margarine
  • 5 - cooking apples
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 cup orange juice, fresh
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange rind

How To Make western apple betty

  • Step 1
    Heat oven to 375. Grease shallow pan.
  • Step 2
    Combine bread crumbs and melted butter; place 1/2 the mixture in bottom of pan.
  • Step 3
    Peel, core and thinly slice apples and arrange over crumbs.
  • Step 4
    Mix together sugar, salt and spices. Sprinkle over apples; top with remaining crumbs.
  • Step 5
    Pour orange juice over crumbs, sprinkle with rind.
  • Step 6
    Bake about 45 minutes or until apples are tender and crumbs are browned.
  • Step 7
    Serve hot with hard sauce.
