This is a recipe I came up with to use my home canned apple pie filling that I preserve when our apple trees produce a lot of apples. This recipe is good either warm or cold! I made it on Sunday and it was gone by Tuesday!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 quarts homemade apple pie filling
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 stick butter (unsalted)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

How To Make old fashioned homemade apple crisp

  • Step 1
Put the apple pie filling in a medium saucepan, add cinnamon and white sugar, mix gently and heat on medium low stirring occasionally until the sugar melts and thickens slightly. Do Not Burn. Remove from heat.
  • Step 2
In a large bowl or standup mixer cream your butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Step 3
In a medium bowl combine your flour, oats, soda and salt mix and gradually add this to the cream mixture.
  • Step 4
Spray a botton of a 9" baking dish, pat 1/2 of the dry mixture on the bottom. Add your apple pie filling and crumble the remaining half of the dry mixture on top. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or cool whip.
  • Step 5
Note: Since I only made this with my homemade canned apple pie filling I do not know if you can use the regular can version. I am sure you would be able to. I would probably add the cinnamon to the store bought but wouldn't add the sugar. Use your own judgment.
