This recipe was a favorite during any of the Holidays, but especially around Christmas or Easter....It was quite colorful and it was a nicely sweet and cold tasting treat after eating the huge buffet of Turkey, Prime Rib or Glazed Ham and Pineapples, Candied Yams, Mash Potatoes and Turkey Gravy, Fresh Vegetables sauteed in Garlic and onions with Almonds and fresh rolls or cornbread...God Bless my family for creating happy memories.

  • 2 packages bag of tiny marshmallows (white)
  • 1 package bag of cocoanut flakes
  • 1 bottle food coloring drops (red or green)
  • 2 packages cool whip (original)
  • 2 cans fruit cocktail, canned
  • 2 packages pecan pieces

How To Make grandmother cohn's heavenly hash

  • Step 1
Drain your Fruit Cocktail from it's syrup or juices real well...let it drain for about 10 minutes...then gently place in a plastic or ceramic mixing bowl (non aluminum or steel)
  • Step 2
Add your Pecan Pieces about a cup's worth and your tiny marshmallows about two cup's worth on top of the fruit mixture and add the cool whip and slowly enfold the marshmallow, fruit and nut through the cool whip...Don't over mix and pour it into a serving dish and promptly cover it with lid or saran wrap and keep it in the fridge while you make the cocoanut topping.
  • Step 3
Place the cocoanut in a mixing bowl and add a few drops of food dye (red or green..your choice or even use pastel dye for whatever your taste and design fancies...MIX the Cocoanut Flakes well with the dye until covered....when done....take the fruit cocktail whip and delicately sprinkle the colorized cocoanut flakes on the top...and recover until you are ready to serve.....sweet and simple!
