This recipe came from my Grandma Barb, and it's the only apple crisp recipe I will make. The addition of a simple syrup over the top of the apples gives this special crisp a caramelized consistency that really makes it stand out.

Ingredients

  • 9 baking apples, peeled, cored and cubed
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups quick oats
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter or imperial margarine, melted (i use margarine)
  • 2 cups karo syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch

How To Make grandma barb's caramelized apple crisp

  • Step 1
    Mix flour, quick oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl. Add melted butter and mix until crumbly.
  • Step 2
    Press 2/3 of mixture in bottom of a greased 9x13 pan or baking dish.
  • Step 3
    Layer cubed apples over the oat mixture.
  • Step 4
    In a medium saucepan, stir together Karo syrup, vanilla and cornstarch until well-combined. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it comes to a boil. Stir and cook another minute. Pour the heated syrup mixture over the apples in the baking dish.
  • Step 5
    Sprinkle the remaining topping mixture over the top.

    Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes.
