This is my absolute favorite summer (or anytime) dessert. I found this recipe in a small Christmas Cookie collection pamphlet from Crisco - 1989

Ingredients

  • CRUST
  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup butter flavor shortening

  • 2 - 8 oz packages of cream cheese
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 - 21 oz can cherry pie filling
  • TOPPING
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, coursely chopped

How To Make cherry chewbilees

  • Step 1
HEAT oven to 350. GREASE a 9x13 inch pan with butter flavored shortening.
  • Step 2
CRUST: Combine flour and brown sugar. Cut in shortening until fine crumbs form. Add finely chopped walnuts. Press crumb mixture into the bottom of baking dish. Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes until edges are lightly browned.
  • Step 3
FILLING: Beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs and vanilla in a small bowl. Mix with electric mixer until smooth. Spread over hot baked crust. Bake 15 minutes longer.
