This is my absolute favorite summer (or anytime) dessert. I found this recipe in a small Christmas Cookie collection pamphlet from Crisco - 1989

Ingredients For cherry chewbilees

  • CRUST
  • 1 1/2 c
    walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 1/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 c
    butter flavor shortening
  • FILLING
  • 2
    8 oz packages of cream cheese
  • 2/3 c
    sugar
  • 2
    eggs
  • 2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 2
    21 oz can cherry pie filling
  • TOPPING
  • 1/2 c
    walnuts, coursely chopped

How To Make cherry chewbilees

    HEAT oven to 350. GREASE a 9x13 inch pan with butter flavored shortening.

    CRUST: Combine flour and brown sugar. Cut in shortening until fine crumbs form. Add finely chopped walnuts. Press crumb mixture into the bottom of baking dish. Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes until edges are lightly browned.

    FILLING: Beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs and vanilla in a small bowl. Mix with electric mixer until smooth. Spread over hot baked crust. Bake 15 minutes longer.

    Remove from oven and allow to cool a bit and finish setting up. Spread cherry pie filling over the cheese layer. Sprinkle coursely chopped walnuts over the top. Refrigerate for several hours. Cut into bars.
