My mom used to make this recipe and it was always a welcome treat. I love it!

Ingredients

  • 28
    caramels, unwrapped
  • 1/2 c
    half and half
  • CRUST:

  • 2 1/2 c
    unbleached white flour
  • 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • 1/4 c
    oil
  • 1/4 c
    water
  • 1
    egg, beaten
  • APPLE FILLING:

  • 6 c
    sliced, peeled apples (about 6)
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1/3 c
    flour
  • 1-2 tsp
    grated lemon peel
  • 2 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • TOPPING:

  • 8 oz
    package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/3 c
    sugar
  • 1
    egg
  • 1/3 c
    chopped nuts

How to Make Apple Pie '63

Step-by-Step

  1. Heat oven to 375*
  2. Heat all caramel sauce ingredients till caramels are melted. Keep warm.
  3. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt. Cut in butter till coarse crumbs. Add oil, water and egg; mix well. Press into 15x10x1 baking pan.
  4. Combine all apple ingredients, toss lightly. Spoon into crust-lined pan. Drizzle warm caramel sauce over apples.
  5. Combine all topping ingredients into bowl; except nuts. Beat till smooth. Spoon over apples, spreading a little. Sprinkle with nuts. Bake at 375* for 35-45 minutes or till light golden brown.
