My brother lived in Germany for a few years. He gave me this recipe.

Ingredients

  • CRUST
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup sweet butter cold sliced
  • 1 - yolk egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 - 3 tablespoons ice cold water
  • APPLE AND CUSTARD FILING
  • 5 -6 - apples, golden delicious, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1-2 teaspoon lemon juice to prevent browning
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 - eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

How To Make apple kuchen

  • Step 1
    Heat oven to 350 degrees
  • Step 2
    Sprinkle apples with lemon juice to prevent browning
  • Step 3
    Mix together flour and sugar
  • Step 4
    cut in cold butter
  • Step 5
    sprinkle with enough water and mix until the dough forms into a ball
  • Step 6
    refrigerate 1 hour
  • Step 7
    Roll dough to fit your pan building up the sides
  • Step 8
    Place in a 10" spring form pan
  • Step 9
    Layer apple slices in a swirl pattern over dough
  • Step 10
    Wisk together eggs, cream and vanilla.
  • Step 11
    Pour over apples and bake 350 for 35 - 45 minutes until custard is set and apples are tender
