Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk, just a bit short of 1/2 cup
  • 6 small baking apples
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1/4 cup butter, divided
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup sugar

How To Make apple dumplings

  • Step 1
Combine the first 3 ingredients in a bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Gradually add the milk, stirring with a fork, until the dry ingredients are moistened.
  • Step 2
Roll the pastry to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface, shaping it into a 21 x 14 inch rectangle. Cut the pastry with a fluted pastry wheel into six 7" squares.
  • Step 3
Peel and core the apples. Place one apple upright on each pastry square.
  • Step 4
Combine the brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Fill the center of each apple evenly with a portion of the brown sugar mixture; dot the apples evenly with 1/8 cup butter. Moisten the edges of each pastry square with water; bring the corners to the center, pinching the edges to seal. Place in a lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish.
  • Step 5
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Combine the remaining 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/8 cup butter, water, and 3/4 cups sugar in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves and the butter melts.
  • Step 6
Pour the hot syrup over the dumplings. Bake at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes; baste the dumplings with syrup. Bake an additional 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve warm.
