Ingredients
- 3 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter or margarine
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 4 slices white bread, toasted
- 1 1/2 cups hot milk
- 3 - eggs
- 1/3 cup finely ground hazelnuts or walnuts
- 1 dash nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon grated lemon peel
- 1 16-ounce cans canned dark sweet pitted cherries, drained (reserve 4 cherry halves for topping)
- 1 cup heavy cream, whipped (for topping)

Step 1Preheat oven to 350F.

Step 2Grease a medium-sized round casserole dish with 1/2 tablespoon butter.

Step 3Sprinkle dish lightly with 2 tablespoons sugar.

Step 4Cut toasted bread into small cubes and place into a large bowl.

Step 5Add hot milk and remaining butter and beat until smooth.

Step 6Add remaining ingredients (except cream), blending well.

Step 7Pour mixture into prepared baking dish and bake for 40 minutes.

Step 8Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly.

Step 9Serve warm.

Step 10Top each serving with whipped cream and garnish with a cherry half.
