This recipe comes from the 1941 edition of the New American Cook Book. It makes a moist, chewy peanut butter cookie. In the picture, I garnished with a dusting of white granulated sugar and a Hershey (Special Dark) Kiss.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 2 Tbsp
    shortening
  • 1/2 c
    peanut butter
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1/3 c
    milk

How to Make Peanut Butter Cookies

Step-by-Step

  1. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together.
  2. Cream shortening and peanut butter. Beat in other ingredients.
  3. Stir in flour, blending well. Chill. Roll out onto 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured board. Cut with cookie cutter. (I roll mine into balls and press a criss-cross pattern into them with a fork)
  4. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in oven at 350 for 10 minutes. Yield 40 cookies.
  5. Garnish with a Hershey kiss or chopped nuts or granulated sugar.
