peanut butter cookies

This recipe comes from the 1941 edition of the New American Cook Book. It makes a moist, chewy peanut butter cookie. In the picture, I garnished with a dusting of white granulated sugar and a Hershey (Special Dark) Kiss.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 - egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/3 cup milk

How To Make peanut butter cookies

  • Step 1
    Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together.
  • Step 2
    Cream shortening and peanut butter. Beat in other ingredients.
  • Step 3
    Stir in flour, blending well. Chill. Roll out onto 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured board. Cut with cookie cutter. (I roll mine into balls and press a criss-cross pattern into them with a fork)
  • Step 4
    Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in oven at 350 for 10 minutes. Yield 40 cookies.
  • Step 5
    Garnish with a Hershey kiss or chopped nuts or granulated sugar.
