This was my great aunt Merline's recipe. My kids love these cookies at Christmas time.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups quick cooking rolled oats
  • 2 cups (12 oz.) candy orange slices
  • 1 cup flaked coconut

How To Make orange slice cookies

  • Step 1
    Cut orange slices into pieces. The easiest way is to snip them with kitchen shears.
  • Step 2
    In a large mixer bowl, cream together sugar, brown sugar and shortening until until fluffy.
  • Step 3
    Add eggs and vanilla and mix well.
  • Step 4
    Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  • Step 5
    Stir the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture mixing well.
  • Step 6
    stir in candy and coconut.
  • Step 7
    Using about 1 Tbsp. mixture for each, roll into 1 inch balls.
  • Step 8
    Place the balls on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Step 9
    Remove from sheet and cool on a wire rack.
