This is a recipe brought from Switzerland by my Grandmother and made by all her sisters as well. To me, it can't be Christmas without Grandmother's Lebkuchen so I usually bake it first. It gets better with age.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 3 large
    eggs
  • 1 c
    walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 c
    candied citron, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    soda
  • 1/3 c
    honey, warmed
  • 3 c
    flour

How to Make Lebkuchen

Step-by-Step

  1. Beat brown sugar & eggs for five minutes in bowl of electric mixer
  2. Disolve soda in hot honey and add to brown sugar mix
  3. Add spices to flour and add to brown sugar mix. Then fruit and nuts.
  4. Mixture will be thick. Pour into jelly roll pan and bake in 325* oven for 25 - 30 minutes.
  5. When cool, frost with a powdered sugar glaze.
