Ingredients
- 3/4 cup evaporated milk
- 1 package (8 ounces) chopped dates
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup flour
- 3/4 cup quick-cooking oats
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (optional)
How To Make date bars

Step 1Combine evaporated milk, dates, sugar and vanilla in medium saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring, until thickened (8 to 10 minutes). Stir on walnuts; remove from heat and cool.

Step 2Sift the flour, salt, cinnamon and baking soda together; add oats. Beat brown sugar and butter on medium speed in large mixer bowl until creamy (1 to 2 minutes). Add flour mixture and stir until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve 1 cup.

Step 3Press remaining crumbs into a greased 8 inch square baking pan. Spread date filling over crust. Top with 1 cup of reserved crumbs.

Step 4Bake at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden. Cut into bars.
