It is comfort food at its finest.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 c
    evaporated milk
  • 1 pkg
    (8 ounces) chopped dates
  • 2 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1/2 c
    firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 c
    butter, softened
  • 1 c
    flour
  • 3/4 c
    quick-cooking oats
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/3 c
    coarsely chopped walnuts (optional)

How to Make Date Bars

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine evaporated milk, dates, sugar and vanilla in medium saucepan.
    Cook over medium-low heat, stirring, until thickened (8 to 10 minutes). Stir on walnuts; remove from heat and cool.
  2. Sift the flour, salt, cinnamon and baking soda together; add oats.
    Beat brown sugar and butter on medium speed in large mixer bowl until creamy (1 to 2 minutes).
    Add flour mixture and stir until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    Reserve 1 cup.
  3. Press remaining crumbs into a greased 8 inch square baking pan.
    Spread date filling over crust. Top with 1 cup of reserved crumbs.
  4. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden. Cut into bars.
