cherry winks from mom (by sharon)
My mom made these every Christmas, when I was young. They are not overly sweet, but chewy & delicious, just the same.

Makes 4-5 dozen cookies
Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour or unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon double acting baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 to 1/2 cups chopped dates
- 3/4 to 1 cups chopped pecans
- 1/4 cup chopped maraschino cherries
- corn flake crumbs for coating
- maraschino cherries, quartered, for top of cookies

Step 1Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease cookie sheets.

Step 2In a large bowl, combine first 4 ingredients. Beat shortening and sugar, until fluffy.

Step 3In another mixing bowl, beat shortening and sugar, until fluffy. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla extract; beat well.

Step 4Add dry mixture, gradually to wet mixture, along with the 1/4 cup chopped maraschino cherries. Add pecans and dates, mixing well.

Step 5Take rounded teaspoonsful or level tablespoonsful of dough, and roll in the corn flake crumbs. Lay on prepared cookie sheets. Top each cookie, with a piece of cherry. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until lightly brown. Cool on rack. Makes 4-5 dozen.
