chocolate sauce pudding
From "NANTUCKET ISLAND COOK BOOK", recipe submitted by Mary E. Coleman. It interests me as our Nantucket relatives were named Coleman, so she may be related. This cookbook was my mother-in-law's and she was born on Nantucket. I just recently found the cookbook in a box in the attic, many years after my MIL passed away. I think this treasure is fascinating reading, and I am enjoying trying the recipes. I thought I'd share some of them with you, as they are good old fashioned home cooking from islanders who didn't have too many conveniences like we do in 2014.

Ingredients
- FIRST: MIX IN BAKING PAN-
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa
- pinch salt
- 2 cups boiling water
- IN A BOWL: CREAM TOGETHER-
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 - egg, well-beaten
- 1 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
How To Make chocolate sauce pudding
-
Step 1Stir together the first four ingredients in the baking pan, until the sugar is dissolved. Let stand while mixing the dough.
-
Step 2Cream the sugar and butter, add milk, egg, flour, vanilla, baking powder and salt. Drop by spoonsful into the chocolate sauce, but DO NOT STIR.
-
Step 3As old fashioned cooks often did not write down everything in the directions, this recipe did not state the baking time or the oven temperature, other than to "BAKE IN A HOT OVEN". I AM ASSUMING 350 DEGREES, AND ABOUT 25 MINUTES.
