I found this recipe when we were first married 48 yrs ago. My family had always loved it. I hadn't made it now for several years but came across it again a couple of months ago and we still love it just as much!

Ingredients

  • 1 c
    raisins
  • 1/2 c
    dates, chopped
  • 1/2 c
    dried apricots, chopped
  • 1 c
    hot water
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp
    butter, cold
  • 1 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp
    cloves or allspice
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 3/4 c
    white sugar

How to Make Old Fashioned Chewy Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. In a large saucepan combine dried fruits, sugar, hot water, and butter. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Cool.
  2. Combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves or allspice, salt. Stir into cooled boiled mixture.
  3. Bake in 8X8 greased pan at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes. Cool before cutting.
  4. You could frost it, but we've always liked it just plain.
