My mother served this very moist and delicious cake at her recent card party. Even if you are not a fan of dates, you would like this cake as there is just a subtle hint of dates.

Ingredients
- 1 cup dates, finely chopped
- 1 1/4 cups boiling water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 - eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- 3 tablespoons cocoa
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Step 1Mix the dates with the 1 1/4 cup boiling water; let cool. Stir in the 1 tsp. baking soda and set aside.

Step 2Cream together 1/2 c. butter, 1 c. sugar, 2 eggs, and 1 tsp. vanilla until creamy.

Step 3Combine 1 1/4 c. flour, 3 T. cocoa, and 1/2 tsp. salt. Blend to creamed mixture; stir in date mixtures.

Step 4Put in 9 x 13" greased pan and sprinkle on top, the following: 1 1/2 c. brown sugar, 1 c. chocolate chips, and 1/2 c. chopped nuts.

Step 5Bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes. ENJOY!
