I was browsing through a cookbook from 1963 and found this recipe. It caught my eye so I had to try it. Everyone here in my house says it's a keeper. We thoroughly enjoyed them. I've written the instructions as they are written.

  • ·
    1/2 cup melted fat (i used oil)
  • ·
    1 cup sugar
  • ·
    3 sq. melted chocolate( i used 3 t. cocoa powder)
  • ·
    3 eggs
  • ·
    1/2 cup milk
  • ·
    2 1/2 cups flour
  • ·
    1 t. baking powder
  • ·
    1 t. soda
  • ·
    1/4 t. salt

  • ·
    4 t. flour (heaping)
  • ·
    1 cup of milk
  • ·
    1/2 cup butter
  • ·
    1 cup vegetable shortening
  • ·
    1 cup sugar
  • ·
    1 t. vanilla

How to Make Whoopie Pies


  1. Mix sugar and shortening until fluffy.
  2. Add melted chocolate and eggs.
  3. Alternately add milk and flour sifted with baking powder, soda and salt. Drop by teaspoons on greased cookie sheet.
  4. Bake at 350* for 10 minutes. Cool thoroughly.
  5. FILLING: Cook four and milk until thick. It will look much like library paste. Cool.
  6. Cream butter and shortening.
  7. Add sugar and vanilla to shortening mixture and cream again.
  8. Add flour mixture to shortening mixture.
  9. Beat thoroughly with mixer until it is creamy.
  10. Spread between two cookies making a top and bottom.
  11. I had extra filling left over.
