I was browsing through a cookbook from 1963 and found this recipe. It caught my eye so I had to try it. Everyone here in my house says it's a keeper. We thoroughly enjoyed them. I've written the instructions as they are written.

Ingredients

  • - 1/2 cup melted fat (i used oil)
  • - 1 cup sugar
  • - 3 sq. melted chocolate( i used 3 t. cocoa powder)
  • - 3 eggs
  • - 1/2 cup milk
  • - 2 1/2 cups flour
  • - 1 t. baking powder
  • - 1 t. soda
  • - 1/4 t. salt
  • FILLING
  • - 4 t. flour (heaping)
  • - 1 cup of milk
  • - 1/2 cup butter
  • - 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • - 1 cup sugar
  • - 1 t. vanilla

How To Make whoopie pies

  • Step 1
    Mix sugar and shortening until fluffy.
  • Step 2
    Add melted chocolate and eggs.
  • Step 3
    Alternately add milk and flour sifted with baking powder, soda and salt. Drop by teaspoons on greased cookie sheet.
  • Step 4
    Bake at 350* for 10 minutes. Cool thoroughly.
  • Step 5
    FILLING: Cook four and milk until thick. It will look much like library paste. Cool.
  • Step 6
    Cream butter and shortening.
  • Step 7
    Add sugar and vanilla to shortening mixture and cream again.
  • Step 8
    Add flour mixture to shortening mixture.
  • Step 9
    Beat thoroughly with mixer until it is creamy.
  • Step 10
    Spread between two cookies making a top and bottom.
  • Step 11
    I had extra filling left over.
