valentine heart cookies

I have made these for my kids since they were little. I have occasionally used prepared buttercream frosting when time was short. Just add food coloring to white frosting.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE COOKIES
  • 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond ectract
  • 1 1/4 cups margarine
  • FOR THE FROSTING
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup margarine, softened
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1-2 tablespoon milk
  • - assorted food colors
  • 1 tube red gel icing

How To Make valentine heart cookies

  • Step 1
    FOR THE COOKIES
  • Step 2
    Place flour, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Stir to combine and set aside.
  • Step 3
    Place margarine and sugar in a large bowl. Cream together until light and fluffy.
  • Step 4
    Beat in the eggs one at a time, then the vanilla.
  • Step 5
    Gradually stir in the dry ingredients until just blended.
  • Step 6
    Cover and chill for an hour.
  • Step 7
    Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 8
    Roll out the dough on a floured surface (1/4 to 1/2 inch thick)
  • Step 9
    Cut with heart shaped cookie cutter.
  • Step 10
    Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.

    Bake about 8 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned.
  • Step 12
    Remove from the oven. Let sit 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

    FOR THE FROSTING

    While cookies are baking and cooling....
  • Step 15
    In a medium bowl, mix (on low speed) the margarine and powdered sugar until just smooth.
  • Step 16
    Stir in the vanilla and 1 tablespoon of the milk.
  • Step 17
    Gradually stir in more milk a little at a time until frosting is smooth and spreadable.
  • Step 18
    Divide the frosting into smaller bowls, one for each color you want to use.
  • Step 19
    Stir in the food coloring one drop at a time until you have the color you want.
  • Step 20
    I put my frosting in a frosting bag to make decorating the cookies easier.
  • Step 21
    Use the red gel icing to write your messages on the cookie. I use the conversation hearts candy as inspiration.
