I found this in a box of old family recipes - it was a gift from a Ms. Kurzawa to my grandmother, who apparently loved these cookies. When I made them, they even won over our resident ginger snap hater - he ate almost the whole batch!

  • 1 c
  • 1 large
  • 3/4 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1/4 c
  • 2 c
  • 3/4 tsp
  • 2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp
  • 1 tsp
  • ·
    powdered sugar

How to Make Sugar 'n Spice Cookies


  1. Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, and molasses.
  2. Blend dry ingredients in a separate bowl, then stir into shortening mixture.
  3. Form dough into 1 in. balls, then place about 2 in. apart on greased cookie sheets.
  4. Bake @ 350 for 10-12 min.
  5. Roll in powdered sugar while still warm. Makes approx. 5 doz.
  6. An additional note from Ms. Kurzawa: "Save some to eat AFTER they're cool, too!"
