These are the best sugar bar cookies... they are a hit everywhere I take them. I use vanilla frosting ( I always add vanilla & little touch of almond extract to my frosting and it gives it a wonderful flavor, and you can also do this to store bought canned frosting too :) and decorate them and use for church potlucks, cookie exchanges etc... always good and moist... Enjoy

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter/margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3 cups - flour
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened in the tub
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • - frosting and sprinkles and colored sugars for decorating.. (optional)

How To Make sugar cookie bars

  • Step 1
Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl with electric mixer, mix together the butter, cream cheese & shortening
  • Step 2
Add the eggs, sour cream, sugar, vanilla & almond extract, mix well until combined and smooth.
  • Step 3
In small bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, soda & salt.
  • Step 4
Add slowly in 1/3's flour mixture, mixing with mixer after each addition.
  • Step 5
Spray a 1/2 sheet pan with nonstick spray. Place dough onto sprayed pan and with a rubber spatula spread cookie mixture to an even layer.
  • Step 6
Bake for 22-25 minutes. Start checking the cookies at 22 minutes, mine were puffed and the middle was just slightly underdone, so I cooked for a few more minutes and they ended up a light golden brown and the edges were golden and pulled away from the pan. Let cool completely.
  • Step 7
Frost with your favorite frosting.. Decorate with sprinkles & course colored sugars if desired. Cut into bars and serve.
