There are lots of snickerdoodle recipes. I originally found this one in The Beverly Lewis Amish Heritage cookbook, but have tweaked it a bit to fit my family's tastes. The original recipe says that this makes 3 dozen cookies.......but I guess I make mine larger and only get about 1/2 of that.

Ingredients For snickerdoodles

  • 1/2 c
    butter, softened
  • 3/4 c
    sugar
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 3/4 c
    flour, sifted
  • 1 tsp
    cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • CINNAMON-SUGAR MIXTURE:
  • 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    cinnamon

How To Make snickerdoodles

  • 1
    Mix together butter, sugar, and egg.
  • 2
    Sift together flour, cream of tartar, soda, and salt; stir into creamed mixture. Chill dough for 1 hour.

    Roll into balls the size of small walnuts.
  • 4
    Combine sugar and cinnamon; roll balls in mixture. Place cookies 2-3 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.

    Bake at 400 degrees until lightly browned, approximately 6-8 minutes. (Cookies puff up at first, then flatten out with a crinkled top).
