Ingredients

  • 1 c
    shortening
  • 1 c
    white sugar
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 1/2 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 c
    old fashioned oatmeal
  • 3/4 c
    finely chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract

How to Make Selma's Best Oatmeal Cookies

Step-by-Step

  1. Cream together the shortening, white sugar and brown sugar.
    Add egg
  2. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and cinnamon. Add it to first mixture.
  3. Then add the oatmeal, walnuts and vanilla.
    Chill dough for an hour.
  4. Drop walnut sized pieces on a greased cookie sheet.
    Butter the bottom of a small glass, then dip it in granulated sugar and use to flatten out the cookie balls. Just keep dipping in sugar-you don't need to re-butter the bottom of the glass.
  5. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes.
    Makes about 6 dozen cookies
