Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 8 - drops red food coloring
  • FOR THE FILLING
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup crisco
  • 5 tablespoons half & half
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar

How To Make red velvet whoopie pies

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa, and salt together.
  • Step 3
    In a mixing bowl, add eggs and sugar. Beat until well combined, batter should be a pale yellow, about three minutes. Add in oil and vanilla. Beat until combined.
  • Step 4
    Gradually add in flour and buttermilk mixture. Add about one cup flour mix, then half a cup buttermilk. Blend. Repeat this process until everything is added.
  • Step 5
    Drop tbsp size dollops on a cookie sheet and bake for 11 minutes. Let cookies cool, then smear icing on one side of a cookie and press together with another cookie to form whoopie pies.
  • Step 6
    Prepare icing by creaming crisco and butter. Add in powdered sugar and half & half. Once combined, add vanilla and turbinado sugar. Smear onto cookies.
