Ingredients

flour
1 tsp
baking soda
1 1/2 tsp
baking powder
2 Tbsp
cocoa powder
1/2 tsp
salt
2
eggs
1 1/2 c
sugar
1/2 c
vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp
vanilla
1 c
buttermilk
8
drops red food coloring

FOR THE FILLING

1/2 c
butter
1/4 c
crisco
5 Tbsp
half & half
3 1/2 c
powdered sugar
1 tsp
vanilla
2 Tbsp
turbinado sugar

How to Make Red Velvet Whoopie Pies

Step-by-Step

  • 1Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • 2Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa, and salt together.
  • 3In a mixing bowl, add eggs and sugar. Beat until well combined, batter should be a pale yellow, about three minutes. Add in oil and vanilla. Beat until combined.
  • 4Gradually add in flour and buttermilk mixture. Add about one cup flour mix, then half a cup buttermilk. Blend. Repeat this process until everything is added.
  • 5Drop tbsp size dollops on a cookie sheet and bake for 11 minutes.

    Let cookies cool, then smear icing on one side of a cookie and press together with another cookie to form whoopie pies.
  • 6Prepare icing by creaming crisco and butter. Add in powdered sugar and half & half. Once combined, add vanilla and turbinado sugar. Smear onto cookies.
