This recipe came from my mother's high school cookbook, circa 1936. She made these frequently while I was growing up. I have modified the ingredients from "lard and sour milk" to shortening and buttermilk.

Ingredients

1/2 c
melted shortening (lard)
1 c
brown sugar

buttermilk (sour milk)
1 tsp
vanilla

chopped peanuts
2 c
all purpose flour
1/2 tsp
salt
1/2 tsp
baking soda
2 tsp
baking powder

How to Make Peanut Cookies

Step-by-Step

  • 1Preheat oven to 425°
  • 2Add brown sugar to melted shortening. Add beaten egg and vanilla; mix well. Add milk and dry ingredients alternately. Stir in nuts.
  • 3Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake 8 minutes.
