I grew up on these cookies ... my mom made them every year at Christmas and we used red and green sugar sprinkled on top to make them "Christmasy!"

Ingredients

1 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 - eggs
2 3/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon

How To Make original snickerdoodles

Step 1

Cream together the first 3 ingredients.

Step 2

Sift together and then stir in the next 4 ingredients.
Step 3

Chill dough in bowl until firm.
Step 4

Roll into balls.
Step 5

Roll in cinnamon/sugar mixture.
Step 6

Place 1 1/2 inches apart on a cookie sheet.
Step 7

Bake until lightly brown. (375 for approximately 10 minutes.)
Step 8

(Cookies puff up first and then flatten and crinkle on top.)
