This was a handwritten recipe in my Mom's collection. I remember them as good but have not tried out the recipe for years.

Ingredients

  • CRUST:
  • 1/4 cup crisco
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • TOPPING:
  • 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 - well beaten eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 1/2 cups rice crispie cereal
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

How To Make old fashioned crispette squares (dated 1950)

  • Step 1
    Cream 1/4 cup Crisco and 1/2 cup brown sugar Sift together 1 cup flour, 1/8 tsp. salt, 1/4 tps nutmeg. With fork or pastry blender cut Crisco mixture into flour mixture until well blended. Press into a 9 inch square (parchment paper lined) pan. Bake 15 minutes in 350 degree oven.
  • Step 2
    Add 1 cup brown sugar to 2 well beaten eggs. Stir to mix. Add 1/4 tsp salt, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 cup coconut,mix well. Stir in 1 1/2 cup rice crispies, 1/2 cup chopped nuts. Spread over baked layer and continue baking 24 minutes more. Cut into squares while warm.
