old fashion sugar cookies
These are my grand-kids favorite, soft sugar cookie that their great grand-mama made every year.

Makes 24-48
Ingredients
- 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 1/4 cups shortening
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
- 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk*
How To Make old fashion sugar cookies

Step 1*To make sour milk, combine 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar and enough milk to make 1 cup. Let stand 5 minutes.

Step 2Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. In an large bowl beat shortening for 30 seconds, add sugar and beat until fluffy. Add eggs, vanilla, and lemon extract and beat well. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternating to shortening mixture, beating till well mixed. Divide in half. Cover and chill at least 3 hours or till easy to handle.

Step 3For large cookies, roll dough 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds with a 3 inch cookie cutter. For small cookies, roll dough 3/8 inch thick and cut into rounds with a 2 inch cookie cutter. Place 2 1/2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with additional sugar.

Step 4Bake in a 375* oven for 10 to 12 minutes or till done. Remove and cool. Makes 24 large or 48 small cookies.
