This recipe comes from my grandmother, Julia May Miller, who died in 1950. Maybe I never ate one she made. However, my mom made this recipe probably a thousand times while I lived at home. While not at all fancy, these cookies are just plain delicious. They have been loved by five generations of my family!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup coconut (or more if you wish !)
  • - nuts as desired

How To Make mom miller's mission tea cookies

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Step 2
    With a mixer, cream butter and brown sugar well. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well.
  • Step 3
    Mix flour, baking soda,and salt. Add to butter/sugar mixture.
  • Step 4
    Add coconut and nuts if using. I love coconut, so I pack the cup or add another handful!
  • Step 5
    Roll dough into 1 inch balls, and place on greased cookie sheet. Flatten each ball with a fork dipped in cold water.
  • Step 6
    Bake 10-12 minutes. Remove cookies to a rack to cool.
