These cookies are another very old recipe, probably Dutch/New Amsterdam or Hudson Valley Dutch As my Great grandmother Pearls ancestry was Dutch.She said that her relatives used to belong to the dutch reformed church and go wearing big round black hats. (Probably like the Dutch Masters clothing.)my father said every Sunday morning she would be up by 3 a.m. baking for the church picnic and for the rest of the weeks Desserts.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup shortening (not oil)
  • 3 - eggs
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • - filling for cookies
  • 1 package dates
  • 1/2 box raisins
  • 1/2 cup water
  • - *cook raisins and dates in1/2 cup water until mixture thickens
  • BAKE AT 350 ON A LIGHTLY GREASED COOKIE SHEET

How To Make great grandma davenports filled cookies

  • Step 1
    Cream Brown sugar, shortening, eggs. Add flour gradually to sugar, shortening and egg mixture. add cinnamon and baking soda. roll out on lightly floured board and cut with a doughnut cutter without the hole. Grease lightly a cookie sheet and put bottoms on greased pan. put a small amount of filling on bottom cookie round and add a whole top and crimp edges shut. make a small steam hole on top of each cookie in the middle and bake 10-12 minutes * don't overcook as it will make them hard.
