I have been making this recipe for many years. My husband loves them and will hint around if he has not had them in awhile. We prefer the cookies without the sugar sprinkled on top.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 - eggs
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

How To Make grandma's tea cakes

  • Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition.
  • Step 2
Combine flour, baking poweder, baking soda, and salt; add to creamed mixture alternating with buttermilk. Mix well. Stir in vanilla extract. Cover and chill 1 hour.
  • Step 3
Roll dough to 1/4" thick on a floured surface. Cut with 2 3/4" round cookie cutter (I use my biscuit cutter). Place on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Sprinkle with sugar.
